The video I watched was about Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory. The multiple intelligence theory states that IQ tests do not work because one can be very intelligent in one area but not in another. Gardner expresses that one can not be labeled as smart or dumb because there are different types of intelligences. A few of them he listed during the interview was interpersonal, intro-personal, and musical. I learned about this in my early childhood education class so I am very familiar with the topic. I believe that Gardner is right with his theory and that we should use the multiple intelligence theory in classrooms. For example, when assigning a project to the class we should give the students different options because one will succeed if they have interest or are engaged in the topic. The teacher could assign the students to write a song about the learning topic instead of writing a paper or making a poster. Students that excel in musical intelligence will benefit and do better if the teacher gives them this option. Therefore a teacher should have project options that address all of the intelligences.
In the passage, What Does it Mean to Be Well-Educated, the author expressed that some of the smartest people in the world do not know how to spell or use punctuation. This brings up the question of what does it actually mean to be educated? The article mentions how sitting in a classroom or high test scores do not mean one is well educated. One could be really smart but just a bad test taker. The author does not agree with high schools exist exams because they actually lead to lower standards. The article also states that we really should not be asking what makes one well educated but what school have the ability to offer a good education. Therefore the article never actually answers the question. Instead it makes a point to say that is not a question even worth asking. A quote I liked a lot from the passage was "To be well-educated, then, is to have the desire as well as the means to make sure that learning never ends". I agree with this passage and the quote. A IQ test or a high school exist exam does not prove how smart one is. We should not need to worry about how smart one is but how we can get a good education and make sure we never stop learning.
